Division of Microbiology/Biodefense
The Division of Microbiology/Biodefense is engaged in many aspects of biodefense research in support of numerous government entities to include the Department of Defense (DoD), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Department of Energy (DoE) and Health and Human Services (HHS/NIAID/CDC), academic institutions, such as the Universities of Maryland and Nebraska, as well as private industry. Laboratory areas of expertise include bacteriology, virology, molecular genetics, Raman spectroscopy, rapid diagnostic test development , validation, sample preparation/analysis and proficiency testing, animal science and quality systems management. The Division is the only military laboratory that is both a College of American Pathology (CAP) certified diagnostic lab and a reference facility for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Laboratory Response Network (LRN). As a reference laboratory, the Division can diagnose and respond to potential purposeful releases of multiple biological threat agents, such as anthrax, plaque, and biological toxins (i.e. ricin, botulinum). During and since the 2001 anthrax release, the Division of Microbiology has responded to a number of potential terrorist events in the Washington Capital Area, providing microbiological and molecular diagnostic support to multiple federal agencies.
