Clinical Signs

BSE has a long incubation period, usually 2-8 years. As a result, the majority of affected cattle are 3 to 6 years of age. Cattle affected by BSE experience progressive degeneration of the nervous system. Clinical signs include aggression, incoordination, abnormal posture, hypermetria, progressive weakness, decreased milk production, and emaciation. The clinical course is prolonged, and ultimately results in death in two weeks to six months. No treatment exists for BSE.
